Pineapple Tomatoes - Year 2
In my opinion tomatoes are some of the most rewarding home grown produce. There's a taste that can only be described as the taste of sun that comes almost exclusively from home grown tomatoes, a certain fuller body taste that one just can't experience from store bought. Because of this tomatoes were one of the first things I experimented with growing my own and last year when I started my very first garden I couldn't wait to grow them.
I've recently planted a few more pineapple tomatoes from seed, along with Heirloom Cherokee's, Beefsteaks and Little Pear Tomatoes. They've grown enough to leave these little seed pods at this point and are into small pots. I hope to get them into their larger pots in a few weeks. I've learned that full sun can actually harm these little guys fresh leaves, so I've been keeping them indoor. I've also started seeds for Brussel Sprouts, Kale, Peas, Peppers, and Zuchhini. The Zuchini have already made it into the ground!
I began growing this plant when I started my garden around this time last year. I got the plant from the local Tomatomania. Many of my tomatoes did not survive one of the colder Los Angeles's winters, and while this plant did go dormant for a bit its back in full swing for round two producing even bigger and better tomatoes. I recently came home from a work trip and came back to honestly 16 tomatoes that were ready to be picked. Round two is so much better than round one and I'm excited to see how it develops over the summer. I've learned a few things with these tomatoes, they like to be almost over watered and then allowed to dry out almost completely before over watering again. Tomatoes have very deep roots and If you try to put them in a small pot they will just grow through the bottom of it....
These pineapple tomatoes are actually extremely versatile. They're a heirloom variety and they're a very thick tomato. I love cutting them for sandwiches, especially BLTs. These BLT's were served on my homemade sourdough, I'm just starting to get this recipe down and fresh tomatoes are a great way to spotlight it.
Friday Night after an extremely long week I came home to this amazing pineapple tomato sauce that David cooked. I was shocked at how good of a sauce these tomatoes make. They're meaty so no extra paste was necessary and they're just a touch sweet which makes for a very versatile sauce. I managed to freeze quite a few servings and am so proud of how prolific my second round of tomatoes is, in March!
